Neotropical Ichthyological Association

Mission

To promote the study of fishes throughout the Neotropics

Welcome to the Neotropical Ichthyological Association! NIA formed in 1989 at the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists meeting in San Francisco, California, USA after a workshop. This group has long served a nucleus and catalyst for scientific research on the fishes of tropical Central and South America and the Caribbean. Starting before the age of social media with an email listserv, NIA has now migrated to Google Groups and Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/neotropicalfish/>. NIA convenes in person semi-annually at academic meetings including the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, the Colombian Ichthyological Congress, and Brazilian Society of Ichthyology. One of the most important tasks of NIA is the annual designation of an award to the best student presentation of research on Neotropical fishes.
